Assets
An asset is a place or a machine that devices belong to. A pump room, a panel, a vehicle. The asset does not send telemetry. The devices on it do.
Use an asset when several devices are one thing to an operator: open the asset and see its devices, or point a dashboard and a rule at “the devices on this asset”.
A rule chain can continue as the other devices on the same asset, or as the children of a gateway. That is chain logic. The asset itself has no chain.
